I have this frame set up for urban trials. geometry is spot-on for urban, but the chainstays are too long for natural and the top tube is quite short for natural trials.

granted, the frame is very expensive, but it is very light (under 4lbs) and strong. I know several people who ride the slalom version (same tubing but different geometry) and haven't broken it even after serious dirt jumping. mine is showing no signs of stress after 1 year. shot-peened and anodized finish is really spectacular and pretty scratch-resistant. dropouts and the BB and seatstay yokes are machined and seem very solid.

The tubing is of normal thickness and seems tougher than say Echo or Zoo frames. You can't expect much dent-resistance from an aluminum frame!

I'm running a disc on the rear with no problems. and Ellsworth customer service is quite good. they called me two months after I purchased the frame to see if everything was ok. I've ordered extra der hangers from them and they are knowledgeable and friendly.

everyone who has ridden my bike has been impressed by the solid yet light feel of the frame and I see no reason it should get a one-star rating. I take one star off because of the exorbitant price!

if you like a frame that manuals well and is suited to more urban-style riding, this frame is super nice.

I've been riding for many years and throughout my time i've owned quite a few 'hardtail' frames. The specialist is the best so far, and i might add the most expensive!! money aside. This is the best frame whether you're a novice or on the verge of becoming a pro. The short rear end makes it ideal for many kinds of riding style not to mention TRICKS.... which as you know, we all dearly love. The frame oozes pure quality from the hand grafted welds to the machined centre chainstays. It is extremely stiff and this frame will actually help you become better at manuals - serious!
My frame is the 2004 model bought from freeborn - the sole importer of Ellsworth cycles in the UK. Ellsworth tend not to make many changes to their frame sets on the basis 'if its not broke dont fix it' but for 2004 they have changed the spec on the Specialist. For a first they have got rid of the stickers and have now started to use lazer technology to etch the decals onto the frame. The look is absolutly wonderful and the quality of the workmanship is excellent. Other mods made to frame include bottle cage holes (that u should never need to use! d:-) )and different machined intersections which I think add to the frames appearance and are also purposful in a specialist kind of way...
The Bike was bought as a frame only. It weighs a measly 3.5lbs and comes in 3 finishes, black (mine) blue, and an off purple colour. It is nearly three times the price of my old Azonic DS1 frame but is a whole 3 times better, and more!
The frame is finished with a matt like finish and is not only pleasing to the eye but pleasing to the touch.
Ellsworth have once again outdone all of the competition as a frame on this level has none.
I'd recommend this frame to anyone who has the money to purchase it. It is after all the best hardtail out there, which many pro riders swear by.
Once built up it looks stunning. So go on! get out there and buy one.

After all "those that ride, know!" - Ellsworth.

Weaknesses; Way too expensive-you can get a better bike for much less money. Ellsworth customer service is terrible. The frame dents way too easily, may be too thin. The disc mounts are too weak, I've seen the frame snap because of riding with discs.

this is a great frame that is almost unbreakble but for the money that is what you would expect.

i had this frame for quite a long time and the only problem i had with it apart from the price was that it was not that resistante to dents.

i would prefere this frame if the chainstays were a bit bigger to withstand those big knocks.

i sold mine to a friend after one year and thought it would be better if i got a cheaper frame that was still as strong but not as light.
