Mine was an '03 270.
Having tested the bike prior to purchase, I felt that the frame was built around the engine. With its torquey pull in the low end, soft mid-range and powerful high end, the bike seemed much more agressive than my previous steed.
It was only after buying it that I realised that there were many problems with it. There's a known problem with the German ignition systems (the Beta dealers were replacing these free of charge at the Scottish Six Days in 2003), which was only solved by replacing the entire electrical system with one out of an '02 Rev 3. Any big or top-end work that needs to be done to the engine (and it's needed every six months or so) requires the engine to be dropped.
The final straw was when, on the third full mechanical rebuild in eight rides, I found a major fracture at the top shock mounting, which is integrated to their monocoque frame. Anyone fancy forking out $1000 for a new mainframe?
To be fair, it was purchased off one of the best riders in the country, but to have it fall apart like it did after inspecting it as thoughourly as I did; well, I won't be going back to one.
Anyone beginning out there, BUY A 200cc BIKE!!! Do not get anything bigger until you're very established, otherwise your scores will suffer and you'll tire faster. Sure, we like to roost, but you'll find EVERYTHING easier on a 200cc.
During the six months I had the bike, it caused me nothing but problems. Sure, it looks the best, but from my experiences, it is nowhere near as well-designed as the Spanish brands. I'm now on a 2003 Sherco, and cannot say a bad word about it!

P.S. I've not put my real name down, as it's a small sport, and you don't want to burn bridges. I'd suggest more people on this site do the same!

Thought i had to write in to defend the Beta after the slating from "Anon". I have a 250 03 rev 3 previous to this i had 250, 00 Rev 3 and prior to that a 270 Gas Gas. Yes there are electrical problems with the Beta, both models i had suffered from the same stator problems, however these where very quickly sorted by the local dealer free of charge. Stator problems apart the Rev 3 is probably one of the most reliable bikes around. You do not have to "drop" the enginge to do top end work and show me a bike that you dont need to "drop" the engine to do bottom end work. It looks like Anon has been unlucky in the bike he purchased. I would highly recommend any of the Rev3 range to anyone from the 200cc for the beginner to the 270cc for the expert.

This is my third beta 2003 270, 2004 250, and now on a 2004 200. I've never had any electric problems or any problems except for some finicky jetting. The 200 is the most fun I've had on any trials bike ever because its just so easy to ride. It will go up, over and around anything I have the desire to try. If you're just starting or want to have more fun riding you need to try one of these bikes.

I had the staotor go out in my '04 Rev 3. I contacted my dealer and they covered the new part under the warranty. I have had the bike for over a year. Beta really takes care of their customers.

I am in the process of replacing the stator on my '04 Rev 3. It's hard to pay a lot of money without having crashed the bike. I know two other guys that had stator problems on their '03 & '04 Rev 3's.

I bought my 2003 REV-3 secondhand. Pretty soon I started experiencing ignition breakdown about 2 hours into a trial. Sometimes I'd let it sit for 15 minutes or so and the bike would be fine for the rest of the day. Or sometimes I'd just keep riding and it would come good. When it was happening I tried replacing the spark plug, replacing the spark plug cap, screwing the plug cap on extra hard. I'd checked all the wires in the workshop...nothing seemed to make a difference. Nobody had told me about a stator problem.
Anyway, one day at a trial I got the shits with it and cut 10mm off the end of the spark plug lead, screwed the original plug cap back on, and it has never ever misfired again. That was more than 12 months ago.
